Spiders are becoming more common as a result of the significant rains we experienced earlier in the summer and the high heat in July. Because of the dampness and abundance of insects this year, many individuals find that controlling and preventing spiders can be very challenging. Spiders are typically found in basements, crawl spaces, and other moist regions of buildings in northern states; they enjoy darkness and high humidity levels. The majority of spiders eat tiny insects and other things they can catch. Here are some suggestions for managing spiders, or spiders, or lots of spiders, while keeping their behavior in mind:
1. Keep the grass mowed short; prune any nearby trees, bushes, and ornamental plants. This will lessen the number of insects around the building that spiders eat.
2. Dim the exterior illumination. Low pressure sodium lamps should replace high power night lights. Both spiders and insects are drawn to outdoor lighting at night.
3. Cover all building openings, including windows, doors, utility lines, and others, with sealant. These areas are where spiders enter the building. Foaming sealants, door sweeps, window seals, and other kinds of caulking can all be quite useful.
4. While it may sound insane, meticulously vacuuming the entire house will eliminate 99 percent of the spiders, insects, eggs, egg sacks, and even the food that many different insects will eat.
5. Discuss the spraying of all-purpose pesticides around the structure with a pest management specialist. The population of bothersome insects and spiders surrounding the structure will be significantly reduced by this type of broad-spectrum application.
